Aircraft parts maker Boeing calls Spirit supply faulty, others – sources

October 14 (Reuters) – An Italian subcontractor at the center of the latest problems with the Boeing (BA.N) 787 Dreamliner has worked for a wide range of aerospace companies, including Spirit AeroSystems (SPR.N), according to the industry sources and documents.

Boeing and regulators said earlier that some 787 parts of airliners had been poorly manufactured over the past three years. They were supplied indirectly by Manufacturing Process Specification (MPS), as a subcontractor of Leonardo (LDOF.MI).

In March, Boeing warned Spirit AeroSystems of suspected problems with parts at MPS and asked it to use alternative suppliers as it continued an audit of the Italian company’s operations, according to a letter seen by Reuters.

He also asked Wichita-based Spirit to trace all the MPS parts he had used up to 2017 and treat them as “suspected non-compliance” meaning they would be subject to checks. additional.

“As a precaution, while Boeing carries out additional tests and evaluations, Boeing has also decided to consider all products treated with MPS as suspect,” he said.

Boeing and Spirit made no immediate comment on the letter. Boeing said earlier that the issues posed no immediate safety concerns for the 787 Dreamliners already in service.

MPS, a coatings supplier based in Brindisi, Italy, did not respond to phone calls and an email request for comment.

MPS is also an authorized Airbus supplier (AIR.PA), according to a list available on the manufacturer’s website.

A spokesperson for the European company did not immediately comment when asked whether it or its suppliers had recently used parts involving work done by MPS.
