Smartphone maker rolls out 140 self-driving cars and humanoid robot demos – IoT World Today

The Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi is accelerating its plan to become a major force in autonomous vehicles (AV).

The Beijing-based company – third only Samsung and Apple in global smartphone sales – provided an update on its progress during a livestreamed corporate event.

“Xiaomi’s self-driving technology takes a self-developed full-stack approach, and the project has made progress beyond expectations,” he said.

Images have previously appeared on Chinese auto enthusiast websites of vehicles claimed to be Xiaomi test cars, and Lei posted a video on Weibo which showed them operating on what appeared to be public roads.

Lei added that Xiaomi will invest $490 million in research and development for the first phase of the project, as the company seeks to become one of the major players in the audiovisual industry by 2024.

The company has assembled a dedicated team of over 500 people covering all areas of the business, including sensors, chips, mapping, algorithms and more. This unit should increase to 600 by the end of the year.

Xiaomi also leverages the expertise that can be provided by existing divisions within the company, covering areas such as artificial intelligence and voice assistance technology.

The company’s progress has been spectacular given that it only announced its entry into the electrified AV arena in March last year, stating that it would set up a wholly-owned subsidiary to operate the business. and committing $10 billion over 10 years.

Its immersion in automated driving intensified in August last year when it acquired California-based self-driving technology company DeepMotion for just under $78 million.

CyberOne humanoid robot

Meanwhile, at the same live-streamed event, Xiaomi showed off a demo of a working humanoid robot prototype called CyberOne.

The robot, which is 5.8 feet tall and weighs 115 pounds, took to the stage, gave Lei a flower, then posed for a selfie, before departing. It is said of supports up to 21 degrees of freedom in motion and achieves a real-time response speed of 0.5 milliseconds for each degree of freedom, enabling it to fully simulate human motion.

CyberOne also claims to be able to communicate, recognizing 85 different environmental sounds and 45 types of human emotions, including happiness and sadness.

While potential real-world applications could include companionship and manufacturing support, the robot is unlikely to enter mass production anytime soon. But it’s The technology will also be applied to more Xiaomi products.
