The editor leaves Archant to become a fact-checker on Facebook
An editor left a regional publisher to become a fact-checker for Facebook owner Meta.
Tom Bristow left Archant, where he had been editor of its investigations unit for the past six years.
Under his leadership, the unit has won a number of industry awards, including its journalists Emily Townsend and Charles Thomson who were named Daily/Sunday Reporter of the Year and Weekly Reporter of the Year at the recent Regional Press Awards .
Tom, pictured, has joined Meta in a role as Bilingual English and German Content Curator, which will involve him ‘finding, verifying and promoting accurate content around Covid-19, climate change and news articles more generally “.
Archant has yet to announce a replacement for Tom although the role has been announced.
Speaking to HTFP, he said: “Being an editor in the investigations unit has been a huge and important part of my life for the past six years.
“I am incredibly proud of the work done by my team, winning a multitude of awards, most recently at RPAs, but most importantly, causing change for the better in their communities.
“They were and still are a pain in the back for the incompetent, the hypocrites and the criminals.
“The work is hard and those who have done it will forever have my respect and hopefully my friendship.”
Tom began his career in 2010 as a reporter for Trinity Mirror’s Merseyside titles including Southport Visit and Liverpool Echo, before joining Archant the following year.
At the Norwich-based publisher, he also worked weekends for the Sunday Mirror and the Sunday People between February 2012 and July 2013.
A graduate of the University of Edinburgh in European History and German, Tom then spent a year in Germany as editor of the English-language news title The Local Europe.
In 2014 he returned to Archant as digital editor for the Eastern Daily Press and the Norwich Evening News before taking up his most recent post two years later.
Tom added: “I’m moving into a new role because I want a change.
“I’ve spent most of my 13 years in regional press journalism and I want to see what other industries are like.
“That’s why I’ve taken a job at Meta as a Content Curator where I will source, verify and promote accurate content around Covid-19, climate change and news articles more generally.”
